MIDDLESBORO — Juanita Collins Latiff, 84, Middlesboro, passed away Wednesday, October 22, 2008, at the Claiborne County Hospital in Tazewell, Tenn.

Born October 12, 1924, at Fork Ridge, Tenn., she was the daughter of the late Jess and Maggie (Weaver) Collins. She was a graduate of Middlesboro High School and Lincoln Memorial University.

Mrs. Latiff began working in the cosmetology field in 1945, she later opened her own beauty shop in 1947. She founded the Collins School of Cosmetology in 1950, and remained active in the operation of both businesses until retiring in 2000 and selling both businesses. Her school was one of the first accredited schools of cosmetology in the state of Kentucky.

She was past president and member of Middlesboro Business and Professional Women’s Club, was active with the Middlesboro Chamber of Commerce and Saint Julian’s Alter Society, and many other civic and professional organizations. In 1980, the Governor of Kentucky named her a Kentucky Colonel. She is a long time member of Saint Julian’s Catholic Church.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel H. Latiff; brothers and sisters-in-law, Erstel (Dorothy) Collins, Tony (Helen) Collins, and Esridge and Joseph “Joe” Collins.

Survivors include the following: two daughters, Dr. Okie Lee Wolfe (John Von Elling), Harrogate, Tenn., and Helen Marie (Darrel) Coleman, Harrogate, Tenn.; grandchildren, David (Sharon) Petersen, Canton, Ga., Tiffany Barnes, Harrogate, Tenn., Dr. Lynlee Wolfe, Chattanooga, Tenn., Andy (Callie) Smith, Hickory, N.C., and Barry Smith, Knoxville, Tenn.; six great-grandchildren, Sela and Cady Petersen, Emma and Jenna Barnes, and Atlie and Graylynn Smith; two sisters-in-law, Maude Collins and Charlsie Collins; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Saint Julian’s Catholic Church, with Father C. Amal presiding.

Interment will follow in the Middlesboro Cemetery. Pallbearers will be her grandsons David Petersen, Andy Smith, Barry Smith; nephews, Jesse Collins and Joddy Collins; son-in-law, Darrel Coleman; and John Von Elling.

The family of Ms. Latiff will receive friends from 6:30-8 p.m. Friday at the Saint Julian’s Catholic Church with a Rosary service beginning at 6 p.m.

Memorials may be made to the Juanita Latiff Memorial Scholarship Fund c/o Lincoln Memorial University.
