Arjay man dies after being hit by truck

WALLINS, Ky. -- On Thursday evening, about 6:29, an Arjay man, was struck by a vehicle on while walking along South U.S. 119 near Wallins in Harlan County.

According to a report in the Harlan Daily Enterprise, Bentley Brock, age 75 of Arjay, was attempting to cross the highway when he stepped into the path of a service truck. It was also reported that he was on crutches and was carrying a bag of groceries.

When Trooper Bryan E. Johnson arrived at the scene at the Wallins intersection of Connector Road, Brock, was lying on the highway, and Harlan EMS personnel were working with him

Witnesses told that the driver of the 2006 Ford F-350 service vehicle, Jeffrey W. Shanks, age 47 of Rosspoint, Ky., was traveling north when Brock stepped in the path of the truck, and that Shanks attempted to avoid the impact, but was unable to. Witnesses also said that Shanks struck Brock with the front passenger side of the vehicle.

Brock was transported to Harlan Appalachian Regional Hospital by Harlan EMS, and was was pronounced dead by emergency room doctors at 7:32 p.m.

No charges are pending against Shanks, however the accident is still under investigation by Trooper Bryan E. Johnson.

In addition to Trooper Johnson, Troopers Jared Boggs and Jimmy L. Halcomb, along with CVE Officers Mark Scott and Jason Freeman, and members of the Harlan County Sheriff’s Office Chaplain Corps., worked the accident.
