Contract worker killed by falling tree

MIDDLESBORO — A contractor working at Cumberland Gap National Historic Park on Monday morning was killed when struck by a falling tree. Aaron Cima, 25, was removing trees from the park with his crew when the tragedy happened. A falling tree cleared by the crew struck a second tree, which then hit Cima.

“This is dangerous work,” said Chief Ranger Dirk Wiley. “We brought in a professional team because of the delicate nature of the work. The crew had followed all the safety guidelines, which included a briefing, protective equipment such as helmets and chaps being worn, and a designated safety route.”

Speaking for the park, Wiley added, “Mr. Cima was part of a large family, and we extend our sympathies. A tragedy such as this is always difficult, but especially during the holiday season.”

No one else was injured. Work has been halted pending further investigation by the park and Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OHSA).
