A local man was air-lifted to the University of Tennessee Medical Center Thursday night after being struck by a vehicle on Kentucky Highway 441.

According to Lt. Tom Busic with the Middlesboro Police Department (MPD), at approximately 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, a maroon Ford Expedition — driven by a 35-year-old Jessica Abner of Middlesboro — was traveling south on Highway 441 when it struck 41-year-old James Phelps, also of Middlesboro. The accident occurred near Arlin Hills Road, and caused severe injuries to the man, who was pushing a bicycle along the road.

Officer Justin Barton happened to be driving in the area and discovered the accident. The Middlesboro Ambulance Service and Middlesboro Air Evac Lifeteam were notified and placed on standby due to the seriousness of Phelps' injuries.

After being transported to Middlesboro Appalachian Regional Hospital, the victim was airlifted to the University of Tennessee Medical Center. His condition is unknown at this time. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.

MPD Officer Josh Pratt is in charge of the investigation.
