CLEAR CREEK — Hazel Jean Smith Carter, age 84 of Clear Creek, passed away Sunday, January 15, 2012, at the Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington, Ky.

She was born November 17, 1927, in Pineville, and was the daughter of the late Oscar and Lucy Hoskins Smith. She was a member of the Harmony Baptist Church. Hazel had worked as a clerk at Newberry’s Department Store for over 30 years.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence G. Carter; sisters, Juanita Carter and Jenny Hall; brothers, Dan James, Bill, Edmond and Noble Smith; and a grandson, Keith Allen Napier.

She is survived by the following members of her family: daughter, Sherry (Colson) Napier, Clear Creek; one stepson, Roger Carter, Waynesfield, Ohio; step-daughters, Eileen (Denver) Barnes, Lima, Ohio, Kathy (John) Guffey, Lima, Ohio, Jackie (Leroy) Gordon, Greenville, Ohio, and Lynn (Ron) Wilder, Waynesfield, Ohio; sisters-in-law, Betty Smith, Speedwell, Tenn., and Ella Rae Smith, Morgantown, Ky.; special friend, Maxine Garland; grandchildren, Brian Napier, Goshen, Ohio, Chucky (Teresa) Napier, Clear Creek, Nicholas Napier, Clear Creek, and Kevin Brent Napier, Clear Creek; special great-grandchildren, Emily and Jacob Napier; 16 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 8 p.m. Wednesday, January 18, at the Creech Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ellis Hugh Hoskins, the Rev. Bobby Grubbs the Rev. Herman Denny and the Rev. Mark Hunter presiding.

Music will be provided by Mark Mahurin, The Napier Sisters, and The Old Straight Creek Trinity Tabernacle Church Singers.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Smith Hill Cemetery at Clear Creek. Pallbearers will be Brian Napier, Chucky Napier, Nicholas Napier, Kevin Napier, Adam Carter, Larry Hall, Steve Smith and Roger Carter.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Creech Funeral Home.
