He was born in Pineville on July 28, 1933, a son of the late John and Nancy Ann Mills Stewart. He had served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, and had retired from serving as Chaplain at the Bell County Forestry Camp for many years. He was a member of the Church of God, Pineville.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a step-daughter, Lisa Lynn Smith; sisters, Ethel Messer, Gladys Gross and Hazel Norris; and brothers, John Jr., Eugene, Gaston, Obie Stewart and Bob Stewart.
Survivors include his wife of 27 years, Ollie S. Smith Stewart; children, Vernon Keith Stewart, Verna Michelle Stewart, Tommy Stewart and Timothy Stewart; step-children and their spouses, Eleanor and Denny Liford, Joey and Mona Smith, Elmer Jr. and Jennifer Smith, and Karen and Marvin Caldwell; 16 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; sister, Edna Kilgore of Tazewell, Tenn.; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 28, at the Arnett & Steele Funeral Home with the Rev. Larry Sowders, the Rev. Walter Saylor, and the Rev. Robert Perkins presiding. Music will be by Rev. Robert Perkins, Margaret Ann Smith and The Singing Foundations.
Burial will be in Big Jim Cemetery at Arjay, with family and friends serving as pallbearers.
