Betty was born in Bell County on January 28, 1943, and was the daughter of the late Rubin and Lillie Mae Gilbert. She was the beloved wife of the late Harley R. Ayers for 38 years. Her love for him never ceased even after his untimely death and she is now reunited with her true love for eternity. To know Betty was to love her, she always had a smile on her face and a story to tell. She loved to loaf and shop and was always ready for a road trip. She loved to sing as a young woman and did so often in her church and for funerals. She was known to speed and drag race in her day and often spoke of her adventures as a young teenager and her friends. She was a daddy’s girl and never got over the loss of her father. If you ever came to her house, you never left hungry, her life’s mission was to feed everyone. She made the world’s best fried chicken and potato salad, hands down! God gave her to us for sixty nine wonderful, loving and giving years. Life will never be the same without our precious mother. Not only have we lost our mother, but also our best friend.
Betty was a wonderful mother to three children, David (Pam) Ayers of Rose Hill, Va., Darryl (Robin) Ayers of Rose Hill, and Deborah (Seymour) Ballard of Barbourville, Ky. She was the loving grandmother of three grandchildren, Whitney Lauren, Elizabeth Faith and Andrew Ray. She is survived by brother, Kenneth (Lois) Gilbert of Corbin, Ky. along with several nieces and nephews.
She recently lost her best friend Betty Hailey, and leaves behind her dearest friend and sister-in-law Ann Ayers.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 12, at the Creech Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bill Poore and Mr. Eric Scott presiding. Music will be provided by Christine Scott and Family.
She will be laid to rest next to her husband at the Balls Chapel Cemetery in Rose Hill, Va. Pallbearers will be her sons David and Darryl Ayers, her only grandson Andrew Johnson, along with Byron Johnson, William Collins, Rodney Cope, her nephew Willard Ayers, and Condy Allen.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. Friday, May 11, at the Creech Funeral Home.
