Panthers well-represented on all-conference teams

The Cumberland Gap football team was well-represented on the Watauga Valley All-Conference teams from last season.

Leading the way was junior quarterback Ryan Shipley, who named co-offensive player of the year.

During the regular season Shipley completed 164-of-324 passes for 2350 yards and 21 touchdowns. He also led the Panthers with 388 yards and 11 touchdowns on the ground.

Jordan Ward of West Greene was the other co-offensive player of the year while Gatlinburg-Pittman's Matthew Pittser was the conference MVP.

South Greene's Matt Partin and Happy Valley's Casey Green were the co-defensive MVPs.

Cumberland Gap placed four players on the all-conference team.

— Senior linebacker/offensive lineman Hunter. Hassler led the Panther defense with 113 total tackles including 72 solo stops and 18 tackles for loss.

— Senior offensive lineman/defensive lineman Jon Shipley. Shipley anchored the Cumberland Gap offensive line from his left guard position and also recorded 60 tackles on defense.

— Senior receiver Byron Johnson. Johnson led the Panthers with 41 catches and totalled 635 yards and seven touchdowns.

— Junior receiver Whitt Willis. Willis caught 38 passes for a team-high 733 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Cumberland Gap also had seven players selected as honorable mention to the all-conferecen team: Senior linebackers Jamie Richardson and Adam Smith, senior receiver Ryan Warren, junior running back Jeremy Jones, junior linemen Patrick Francisco and David Cornelius and sophomore center Daniel Pace.

The Panthers finished with a 7-4 record in 2008, including a 4-2 mark in Region 2-AA. They lost at Alcoa in the first round of the playoffs.
