The Middlesboro High School boy’s golf team opened the 2012 campaign Monday in Harlan, playing in the All “A” Regional tournament. The Yellow Jackets finished runner-up to team champions, Jackson County. MHS carded a team total of 341, while Jackson County posted a very impressive total of 288.

The medalist honors went to Estridge from Jackson County who posted a one over par 69. The Jackets were led by senior co-captain Michael Wilson who posted a 72. Wilson was bidding to win the individual medalist for the fourth consecutive year. Although he did not win the title, Michael did earn the first qualifier spot and earn a trip to the All “A” state tournament in Somerset. The tournament will be played at Eagles Nest Country Club on Sept. 8.

“Michael did not have his A game today, but he hung in there and kept fighting ‘til the end, I am really proud of him and this is a great accomplishment,” said Coach Greg Lasley.

Other Jacket golfers competing in the tournament were Eric Francis with an 83, Micah Robbins shot 91 and J.P. Maiden carded a 95.

“I was pleased with our first outing and how all the guys kept their focus, we all showed a lot of fight and kept grinding until the end,” Lasley added. “We will only get better, they are all a great bunch of guys and extremely hard workers.”

The Jackets will be in action on Monday as they play host to Pineville and Bell County in a tri-match at Middlesboro Country Club. Tuesday the team will travel to Jonesville, Va., to play in the Farmers and Miners Invitational hosted by Lee High. That tournament will be played at Cedar Hills Country Club.
