WILLIAMSBURG — The Pineville Mountain Lions dug themselves an early hole and never could climb all the way out of it Thursday as they dropped their regular season finale to Williamsburg 65-50.

Yellowjacket senior guard Aaron Cunningham scored 11 of his 14 points in the fourth quarter and went 8-for-8 from the free throw line as Williamsburg held on. Senior center Jacob Teague led the team with 16 points while junior guard Steven Taylor finished with 15.

Pineville was led by senior guard James David Strange’s 21 points, Jesse Fuson added 12 and Shawn Madon 10.

Williamsburg held Strange scoreless in the first quarter while Taylor scored eight of his points in the opening frame and Teague added six. The Lions hit only two field goals — 3-pointers from Fuson and Mike Cunningham and trailed 14-7 after one.

Strange got going in the second period, hitting a 3 and scoring six points. Fuson added five and Pineville climbed to within 24-20 at the half.

Madon put up six of his ten points in the third quarter while Strange and Fuson both hit 3s for the Lions. But Teague scored seven points to lead Williamsburg to a 40-32 lead going into the fourth.

As has been his custom this year, Strange took over the Lion offense in the fourth quarter. He hit two 3-pointers and three 2-pointers for 12 points, but it was the Yellowjackets’ night.

Cunningham hit a 3 and Cory Fleenor score sis of his nine points in the fourth quarter. Williamsburg went a combined 12-of-15 from the line in the period to pull away for the 15-point win.

Williamsburg (9-16) plays at Red Bird tonight at 7:30 p.m. While Pineville (17-11) is off until meeting host Barbourville in the first round of 51st District Tournament Wednesday at 7 p.m.
