HARROGATE, Tenn. — The Lincoln Memorial University women’s soccer team opened the 2012 season by taking a 2-1 victory over the Lady Chargers of the University of Alabama-Huntsville on Saturday afternoon at the LMU Soccer Complex. The Lady Railsplitters jump to 1-0 to start the season, while the UAH falls to 0-2 on the year.

Preseason All-South Atlantic Conference Second Team selection Savannah Pitt led the Lady Railsplitters offensively with a pair of goals to lift the team to victory.

The Lady Railsplitters struck first in the match as Pitt knocked in a header in the 22nd minute to put LMU on top 1-0. Pitt was assisted on the play by freshman Josefin Hedstrom, as the Burtrask, Sweden native placed a beautifully struck, long pass from the left wing to the front of the net, which was finished off by Pitt’s header into the back of the net.

That goal was quickly answered by the Lady Chargers as Trisha Ehrhardt found the back of the net as she followed a deflection by an LMU defender. With Ehrhardt’s first goal of the season, the match was all square at 1-1.

The game went scoreless for nearly the next sixty minutes until Savannah Pitt notched her second goal of the game and the season, taking advantage of a pass from freshman Olivia Thompson off of the right wing. Thompson’s perfectly-timed pass found Pitt streaking in front of the net and the Gallatin, Tennessee product did the rest, notching her second goal of the game in the 85th minute.

LMU held the Lady Chargers without a shot in the final four and a half minutes of the contest, running out the clock to take a 2-1 victory in the season opener.

Senior goalkeeper Kayla Hanson made four stops in 90 minutes of play on the afternoon. The Lady Railsplitters dominated the offensive end of the game as they outshot Alabama-Huntsville by a margin of 18-7. Sophomore Nicole McKinney and freshman Maddy Nagy led the Lady ‘Splitters with three shots apiece with several of those attempts narrowly missing the net.

The Lady Railsplitters will be back in action on September 4th, as they host USC Aiken in an all-important regional matchup. That contest is slated for a 2 p.m. start at the LMU Soccer Complex.
