The Middlesboro School District received two grants this 2012-13 school year to implement a salad bar at the Middlesboro High School. The first grant was for $5,000 from the Healthy Schools Challenge Grant, which is funded by Micro Clinics International. The second grant was for $2,000 from the Action for Healthy Kids, which was funded by the Walmart Foundation. According to Debbie Mayes, food service director, the salad bar provides another healthy alternative to the main school lunch menu. The salad bar offers vegetables, fruit, proteins and grain and dairy. A lot of students are taking advantage of this at lunch time ensuring a healthy, low fat meal.
