BRISTOL, Tenn. — Paced by three goals and an assist from Mario Pinto, the Lincoln Memorial University men’s soccer team stormed past the King College Tornado by a margin of 5-0 Wednesday afternoon. The Railsplitters move to 3-0 on the season, while King College falls to 0-5 on the year.
Mario Pinto took his total to four goals for the season after leading the way for the Railsplitters with a hat trick in the 5-0 win. Pinto’s first goal of the game came in the 11th minute, as Diego Deschamp laid off a free kick to Pinto who slammed the ball into the top-left corner of the net.
Pinto struck again in the 19th minute, taking advantage of Leonardo Germniani’s play into the box with a sliding kick past the Tornado keeper and into the bottom-right corner of the net.
Deschamp started the scoring for the Railsplitters in the contest, as he used a pass from Pinto to notch a goal from the top of the box. That came as his second goal of the season as the combo of Pinto and Deschamp put Lincoln Memorial University out to a 3-0 lead after one half of play.
In the 71st minute, Pinto picked up where he left off with an unassisted goal, sliding a shot past the Tornado keeper to push the score to 4-0. Wes Williams scored his first goal in a Railsplitter uniform to cap the afternoon, as his shot from the edge of the box in the 79th minute found the net and put LMU on top, 5-0.
The Railsplitters controlled the pace of the game offensively, firing 19 total shots while limiting the Tornado to eight. Ten of Lincoln Memorial’s shots came on goal with King College managing only one attempt at the goal. Chris Nash fired three shots on goal for the Railsplitters, but was held scoreless for the match.
Marcel Barwanietz recorded his third straight shutout of the season with 90 minutes in goal, recording a single save in the game.
The Railsplitters will be back in action Friday, as they head to Mars Hill College to open South Atlantic Conference play. That match is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start.
