JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. — Carson-Newman College scored twice in the opening 15 minutes and held off the Railsplitters down the stretch, as the Eagles took a 2-1 victory over the Lincoln Memorial University men’s soccer team on Wednesday night in Jefferson City, Tennessee.

The loss drops the Railsplitters to 0-2 in the South Atlantic Conference and 3-2 overall, while Carson-Newman moves to 2-0 in SAC play and 4-2 on the season.

Carson-Newman opened the scoring with a pair of goals in the first 15 minutes of play. Joao Dowsley netted the first score for the Eagles in the 8:47 mark, as he used a pass from Sindre Welo off the corner kick to put Carson-Newman out to a 1-0 lead. Welo got in on the act in the 11th minute, scoring with a boot from beyond the box into the back of the net. The two teams went to the break with the Eagles holding sway at 2-0.

The Railsplitters continued to face that deficit for the vast portion of the game until Chris Nash broke through at the 84:08 mark. Nash cut the score to 2-1 with his second goal of the season, grabbing a rebound and beating the Eagle keeper.

Despite notching four shots with one shot on goal over the final six minutes of play, the Railsplitters were kept off of the board as Carson-Newman held on for a 2-1 victory.

All told, the Railsplitters finished the game with 21 shots, paced by six shots and three shots on goal from Diego Deschamp. The Eagles were held below that number with 15 shots in the game. LMU recorded ten corner kicks to five for Carson-Newman.

Marcel Barwanietz played the entire contest in goal for the ‘Splitters, making four stops in total. Rumwald Le Gueval matched that effort for the Eagles with 90 minutes of play and seven saves over that span.

The Railsplitters return to Lincoln Memorial University for a South Atlantic Conference matchup against Lenoir-Rhyne University on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
