NEWBERRY, S.C. — The Lincoln Memorial University volleyball team capped their weekend sweep with a 3-0 triumph over South Atlantic Conference foe Newberry College on Saturday afternoon.

The three-set win (25-23, 25-15, 25-18) takes the Lady Railsplitters to 2-1 in league play and 9-5 on the season, while the Wolves fall to 1-3 in the SAC and 7-7 overall.

Blaire Fowler led all players in the contest offensively, as the Fort Worth, Texas, native notched 12 kills on a .310 attack percentage. Fowler capped her performance with a team-high 15 digs. Kaitlin Walton recorded seven kills in the match, while Jennifer Drumm added six. The setting duo of Brittany Pugh and Allison Beavers compiled 15 assists apiece in the contest. Beavers added 13 digs to complete her double-double performance.

Newberry College was led by Samantha Parrish’s nine kills and 11 digs. Elayni Stokes paced all players in the match with 21 digs. Blair Browning dished out 13 assists to led the Wolves.

The Wolves took early command of the first set, jumping out to a 6-2 lead on the wings of four kills from three different players. LMU worked quickly to erase that early deficit with a 10-1 run, with seven consecutive points coming off of the serve of Beavers. Later in the set, Lincoln Memorial continued to hold sway, grabbing a 17-11 lead on a kill from Fowler. The momentum shifted again as the Wolves regained the lead on a 11-4 rally, capped by a bad set from the Lady Railsplitters. LMU found an answer once more by taking three of the next five points to tie the set at 23-23. From that juncture, the Lady ‘Splitters finished the set with two straight kills from Fowler to grab a 25-23 victory.

Lincoln Memorial continued to hold the momentum in the second set, as they ran out to a 15-7 lead. A kill from Walton, a Wolves’ attack error and a kill from Fowler pushed the Lady Railsplitters’ lead to 18-8 late in the set. As the set came to a close, the Lady Railsplitters secured a 25-15 victory with another kill from Walton, putting the score at 2-0 in favor of LMU.

Kills from Kendra Gephart and Fowler tied the third set at 11-11 at the midway point. LMU surrendered the ensuing point before taking the next three, with two points coming off of aces from Casey Mense. Holding a 14-12 advantage, Lincoln Memorial implemented a 6-2 run to grab command of the third stanza, with Walton pacing LMU over that span with a pair of kills. The Wolves cut the score to 20-17 late in the set, which was answered with four consective points for the Lady Railsplitters to take the set to match point for LMU. Newberry College recorded a service error two points later to give LMU a 25-18 victory.

The Lady Railsplitters set the pace offensively and defensively, recording 39 kills to 31 for Newberry and 70 digs to 57 for the Wolves. In total, LMU hit .197 in the contest while limiting the opposition to only .053. The Lady Railsplitters also recorded eight blocks in the affair.

Lincoln Memorial University returns to Mary Mars Gym for the next three matches, beginning with a matchup against SAC foe Tusculum College Tuesday. That contest is slated for a 7 p.m. start.
