PINEVILLE — A pre-trial hearing for David Poppiti — charged with the 2008 murder of Bell County Sheriff Deputy Sean Pursifull — scheduled yesterday at 10 a.m. was postponed again. The pre-trial hearing is now scheduled for April 17 at 2 p.m. Additionally, the trial date got bumped to May 4.

Poppiti, 18, from Delaware, and his passenger Eric J. Gerren, 18, allegedly left a Harlan County gas station without paying for their $38 tank of gas early on Sunday, Jan. 10, 2008, and a high-speed chase ensued into Bell County, on U.S. Hwy. 119.

The chase ended when their vehicle left the highway and crashed into Deputy Pursifull’s parked cruiser, according to a Kentucky State Police report. Pursifull and his police dog, King, died on the scene.

Poppiti is currently being held at the Whitley County Detention Center. He was moved there in June 2008 from the Adair County Juvenile Detention Center.
