Dogs practiced their obedience skills one last time at the National Guard Armory Monday night, as the largest class ever concluded with honors from the Good Dog Training Club. Pets practiced and mastered basic skills during the course, offered to Tri-State area residents. Pictured above are several of the obedient pooches. Pet owner Leslie Mills is pictured (at right) with her Great Dane, Abigail.

MIDDLESBORO — We are a communicative society. Verbal skills are key to progressing smoothly through our daily lives. So what do you do when your “best friend” can’t understand what you say? Enroll him or her in the Good Dog Training Club — they know how to teach an old dog new tricks.

The Tri-State area has been provided with dog obedience classes for several years. What began as the Tri-County Obedience Club, with Main Street Instructor Pat Bolton, has evolved into the Good Dog Training Club. The training club began teaching pups a lesson about four years ago.

Well-behaved dogs are cordial family members, and in some cases are essential to a pet owner’s health and well-being. Basic obedience can be taught to any dog — regardless of age, size, or breed — molding them to the owner or family’s needs. Obedience is proven to strengthen the human and animal bond. It also helps to establish a life long bond between the pet and owner.

People who designate time to train their dogs show a willingness to accept

responsibility for their pets. They also show respect for the neighbors and community by preparing their pet for their outdoor environment. The Good Dog Training Club’s instructors have many years of experience in teaching owners how to best train the pet, not only puppies but senior dogs as well. Both the dogs and owners seem to enjoy themselves while doing so.

The Good Dog Training Club offers testing and training for Human Animal Bond in Tennessee, Canine Good Citizen and Therapy Dog International organizations for owners who are interested in taking their dogs to schools, nursing homes and therapy units, etc.

The Good Dog Training Club is a community-oriented endeavor. Members have committed to walking with their dogs to raise money for this year’s March of Dimes. They are also hosting numerous fundraisers, including fun dog shows, to benefit local pet shelters. Everyone and their pet is invited and encouraged to join the club in the upcoming events.

For more information, residents may contact a Good Dog Training Club member in Middlesboro, Pineville, Tazewell and Harrogate. Members are: Rita VanBebber, Leslie Roden, Jessica Roden, Karon Moore, Debbie Sharpe, Leslie Mills and Tanya Parton Noah. You may also contact club members via e-mail at gdtc@live.com.
