PIPPA PASSES — A quartet of Lady Bulldogs scored in double figures as the 24th-ranked Union women’s basketball team defeated host Alice Lloyd (Ky.) 84-70 Tuesday.
With the win, Union improves to 4-0 overall. Alice Lloyd is now 2-3 on the year.
Junior guard Amber Taylor paced Union with 17 points and a game-high seven assists. Taylor was a perfect 8-for-8 at the foul line. Senior Lindsey Waters followed with 16 points to go along with eight rebounds, four blocks and four steals. Freshman Haley Perkins netted 14 points, and junior Jennifer Thomas scored a career-high 11 points coming off the bench.
The Lady Eagles got the early jump on the Lady Bulldogs as they built a 9-2 lead following a Courtney Crowder bucket at the 16:54 mark. However, Union responded with an 11-0 run. Taylor capped the rally with a 3-pointer to give Union a 13-9 with 13:50 left in the half. A 6-0 surge by Alice Lloyd put Union down 16-13. The Lady Bulldogs bounced back again and built a 38-28 lead with just under two minutes remaining on their way to a 40-33 halftime advantage.
Union never trailed again. Alice Lloyd cut the deficit to four points early in the second half, but the Lady Bulldogs maintained a double-digit lead for much of the period, leading by as much as 18 en route to the 84-70 decision.
Union shot 46.8 percent (29-of-62 shots) from the field and made 9-of-26 shots (34.6 percent) from behind the arc. Alice Lloyd made 22-of-61 shot (36.1 percent) from the field and 2-for-15 (13.3 percent) from long range.
Ariel Nickell led Alice Lloyd with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Jacquelyn Hickson added 10 points.
The Lady Bulldogs return to action on Friday and Saturday when it participates in the Grace College Classic in Winona Lake, Ind. Union will face No. 4 Indiana Wesleyan on Friday at 1 p.m. before facing host Grace on Saturday at 2 p.m.
