Elmer Maxwell, 88, of Middlesboro, KY, passed away Thursday, Dec. 20, 2012, at his home. He was born May 4, 1924, in Middlesboro, the son of the late Eulis (Dude) and Ruby Yeary Maxwell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Kenneth Maxwell, and one sister, Betty Maxwell Pressnell.

He was a charter member of the Binghamtown Baptist Church, where he served as treasurer and Sunday School teacher for 30 years. During World War ll, he served in the Navy at the Naval Air Station on Whidbey Island, Washington. After returning home, he joined the National Guard. He was postman with the U.S. Postal Service for 30 years, and after retirement, worked as a locksmith for 25 years.

He is survived by his wife, Emma Madon Maxwell; 3 daughters: Rhonda (Steve) Roark, Leisa (Bill) Pickering, and Becky (J.B.) Pitman; 1 son, Steve (Susan) Maxwell; 9 grandchildren: Benjamin (Hesper) Roark, Damian and Graham Pickering, Natalie, Brooks, and Daniel Pitman, Samuel, Olivia, and Madeline Maxwell; 3 great-grandchildren: Annabella, Emaline, and Elanore Roark; sister, Katherine Williams; brother, Clarence (Sherry) Maxwell, and a host of other family and friends.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Sunday, December 23, 2012, at Shumate Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. William Boyd Bingham and Gary Bingham officiating. Music will be provided by Thomasa Risner. Burial will be at the Yeary Cemetery in Binghamtown. Pallbearers will be his grandsons. The family will receive friends 1-3 p.m. at Shumate Funeral Home Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Gateway Christian School.
