BOWLING GREEN (AP) — Western Kentucky coach Bobby Petrino has hired Jeff Brohm and Nick Holt to be his coordinators. Brohm will lead the Hilltoppers’ offense, Holt the defense.
“To be able to announce Jeff Brohm and Nick Holt as our two coordinators makes this a very, very good day for me,” said Petrino, hired Dec. 10 to replace Willie Taggart after he left to become head coach at South Florida.
The hires round out Petrino’s staff. He announced the hiring of seven position coaches on Tuesday.
Brohm, who will also have the titles of assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach, comes to WKU after serving last season as Alabama-Birmingham’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He also served as Petrino’s quarterbacks coach at Louisville from 2003-06.
Brohm’s younger brother, Brian, threw for a school-record 30 touchdowns in 2007 when Jeff served as the Cardinals’ assistant head coach and passing game coordinator.
“I have a past with coach Petrino,” Brohm said. “I have a great deal of respect for his ability as a coach, what he believes in. … I wanted to get a chance to get back and work with him.”
Petrino said he’ll handle offensive game day play-calling duties himself, but Brohm will have major input during the week.
Holt joins the Hilltoppers after a year as Arkansas’ on-campus recruiting coordinator. He was defensive coordinator at Washington from 2009-11 and Southern California from 2006-08, and Idaho’s head coach from 2004-05.
Holt was defensive line coach at Louisville in 1998, when Petrino was the Cardinals’ offensive coordinator.
Holt replaces Lance Guidry, who wasn’t retained by Petrino after he took over head coaching duties last week.
“I think (WKU) is an up-and-coming place, a sleeping giant,” Holt said. “I think a lot of neat things can happen here.”
