LOG MOUNTAIN —The Bell County Lady Cats shook off a slow start, and just kept rolling Monday as they pulled away for a 69-35 win over Lee High, Va.

Sophomore Maci Morris led Bell with 17 points while Morgan Garnett and Kelli Smith added ten each and Jess Sanders nine. Ten different Lady Cats scored at least three points in the game.

Allyson Robbins came off the bench to lead Lee with nine points while Courntey Taylor added seven and Chelsey Parsons and Mackenzie Arney six each.

Early on it was the Lady Generals taking charge. Parsons scored a pair of first quarter baskets, Taylor and Arney hit 3-pointers and Samantha Ely added two points as Lee opened up a 13-9 lead.

Sanders scored seven points in the first quarter or the Bell, but other than that the Lady Cats were held to just a Sarah Collins basket.

The Lady Cats turned up the defensive intensity in the second quarter and outscored Lee 22-4 to take control of the game. Morris scored 11 of her points in the second quarter, including a 3 to give them a 14-13 lead early in the period and they never looked back.

“I think we came out a little flat. One of the things we talked about before the game was getting better defensively and playing with the type of intensity you need to have for four quarters,” Lady Cat coach David Teague said. “We missed some shots around the basket and we allowed that to affect us. As the game went along we picked our intensity up, made some baskets and was able to pull out a good win.”

Sanders and Katrina Johnson added layups and two baskets from Morris pushed the lead to 22-13. Morris came away with a steal and Garnett cashed it in to make it 24-13 by the 3:00 mark. By halftime the Lady Cats were up 31-17.

Smith and Garnett each hit a pair of 3s in the third quarter — the two combined for 15 points in the period. A 3 from Katrina Johnson gave Bell their biggest lead to that point at 41-20, with 2:00 left in the third. Four steals later, Smith scored inside to stretch the lead to 30 at 50-20 and it was 53-23 going into the fourth.

Robbins scored eight of her points in the fourth quarter for the Lady Generals, but the Lady Cats continued to pull away behind their bench. Caleigh Collett and Bethany Miracle scored four points each in the final period while Alex Brock added three points and Bell went on to win by 34.

“I was pleased with the effort we came back out with in the second half,” Teague added. “We’ve just got to keep working and trying to get better. Hopefully we’ll continue to see progress.”

Bell County (13-3) visits South Laurel on Friday.
