A Lee County, Va., man was arrested and indicted on murder charges involving the death of 34-year-old Amy Carter, which occurred on April 14, 2011.

Tim Carter, 46, was indicted on the charge of first-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

On Thursday morning, evidence was presented to a Lee County Grand Jury which resulted in the charge being placed against Carter.

According to Lee County Sheriff Gary Parsons, Carter was the husband of the deceased. He was arrested Thursday afternoon.

Tim Carter is being held in the Duffield Regional Jail without bond.

Parsons said the case began when a call came in at 5:20 p.m. on the date of the incident from Tim Carter’s mother stating her daughter-in-law, Amy Carter, had shot herself at her son’s residence in the Flatwoods section of Lee County.

According to the press release, officers were immediately suspicious at the scene based on the positioning of evidence and the long length of time between the incident and the call to the police.

According to Parsons, working in conjunction with Commonwealth’s Attorney Shawn Hines, his office requested a large battery of forensic testing from the state laboratory. When the results of some of those test were received, it led to the need for more testing to answer further questions.

Also, the Virginia State Police assisted with accountants and computer experts, along with a field agent to set in on some of the interviews.

“I know this has been a long trying period for the family. I am sorry we could not get to this point sooner, but we wanted to make sure we had our ducks in a row and could produce a solid fact-filled case that would result in a conviction,” said Parsons.
