Men’s Tennis Defeats University Of The Cumberlands, 5-2

WILLIAMSBURG — The Lincoln Memorial University men’s tennis team captured a 5-2 triumph over the University of the Cumberlands on Tuesday in non-conference action. The Railsplitters improve to 5-3 on the season, while the Patriots dropto 1-6 overall.

Lincoln Memorial ran out to a commanding lead after doubles play, as they earned victories in all three of those contests. Marcelo Alvim and Will Sparks set the tone with an 8-4 win over Ariez Heshaam and Danilo Garcia at No. 1 doubles, while Alexey Minevskiy and Guilherme Rocha earned an 8-6 triumph over Eric Mikhlin and Juan Villamizar at No. 2 doubles. Michael Koenen and Gabriel Martins capped the doubles sweep for LMU with an 8-3 win at the No. 3 spot over Tyler Smith and Daryl MacLeish.

In singles play, LMU won two of the four matches which were completed to earn the 5-2 win over the Patriots. Marcelo Alvim defeated Tyler Smith 6-2, 7-5 at No. 2 singles, while Guilherme Rocha cruised past MacLeish, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 5 singles to cap the win.

No. 1 Philipp Hoffmann suffered only his second loss of the season in singles play, as he fell to Ariez Heshaam, 6-4, 6-3, at the top spot. Gabriel Martins was also edged in singles play, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4), by Juan Villamizar at No. 4.

The Lady Railsplitters dropped their third consecutive decision on Tuesday, as they suffered an 8-1 setback at the hands of the University of the Cumberlands. Lincoln Memorial University fell to 3-4 overall on the season while the Patriots improved to 3-2 on the year.

The lone point of the afternoon for Lincoln Memorial came in doubles play, as Leah Donoff and Aura Penalosa edged N. Thirumalaichelvam and Shelby Muff, 8-4, at No. 1 doubles. However, the remainder of the eight matches fell in favor of the Patriots. At No. 2 doubles, Alexandra Granger and Summer Robinson fell 8-1 at the hands of Chanel Williams and Sydni Grimes, while Erica Stephens and Kelsey Vinsant were dropped 8-4 by Erin Hart and Trinity Goodman at No. 3 doubles.

In singles play, No. 1 Leah Donoff suffered her first loss of the 2013 season with a 6-4, 6-4 setback against Thirumalaichelvam. Donoff falls to 6-1 on the year, all at the No. 1 singles position.

Each of the next five singles matches went in straight sets for the Patriots. Alexandra Granger fell to Williams at No. 2, while Aura Penalosa lost to Muff at No. 3.

No. 4 Summer Robinson, No. 5 Erica Stephens and No. 6 Kelsey Vinsant also fell in straight sets to cap an 8-1 loss for the Lady Railsplitters.
