PINEVILLE — Monday morning, 39-year-old Lora A. Amburgey and her younger lover, 27-year-old Joshua K. Parsons, appeared in Bell Circuit Court. The couple was present for a pre-trial conference hearing in Honorarable Jim Bowling’s courtroom.

The Pineville couple was arrested on Tuesday, January 27, for the murder of 70-year-old Paul Slusher. Amburgey and Parsons’ indictment by the Bell County Grand Jury alleges that they invaded Slusher’s home in Fourmile, robbed him, proceeded to gag and bind him, and then reportedly confessed to throwing Slusher into the Cumberland River.

The murder suspects’ confession led to an extensive search by Bell County emergency responders. On Thursday, February, 5, after nearly two weeks of searching, Slusher’s body was discovered in the Cumberland River.

According to Bell County Sheriff Chief Deputy David Cornelius, Slusher’s body was found approximately one mile downstream from the Page Bridge (near the area of Page School and the Bell County Garage). Slusher’s body was pulled from the Cumberland River at approximately 4:15 p.m.

During Amburgey and Parsons’ pre-trial conference, Amburgey’s public defender Kotha Hudson and Parsons’ public defender Barbara Carnes, made a motion to discover any new evidence that the Commonwealth’s prosecution holds against their clients. There was no new evidence to present and on behalf of the defense, no other action was taken.

According to officials from the Circuit Court Clerk’s office, a pre-trial conference will likely be held once a month to discover any new evidence that state has against Amburgey and/or Parsons. The pre-trials will continue until the actual trial date which is expected to begin this Fall.

Defense attorneys did not make a request for bond, therefore, Amburgey and Parsons will remain lodged in the Bell County Detention Center on charges of murder, adult kidnapping, tampering with physical evidence and first degree robbery.

A second pre-trial conference date is set for Monday, May 18, at 9 a.m. in Bell Circuit Court.

Paul told his captures that if he commited a crime worthy of death, then kill me. He didn't say your penalty of death, no matter the crime, is unjust. To kill an innocent is murder, to kill a murderer is justice. Perhaps you would rather these two one day be released from our lax justice system so they can kill again? If that happens then what do you say? Oh well? Too bad? Maybe they will reform, maybe they won't. We have free will. Is it a risk you are willing to take, with other folks lives? I'm not.

I cant beleive how some of you so called Christians are acting on here. Calling out for the death of two more people! You need to pray that Lora and Josh find forgivness in the Lord and become saved and will stand with us side by side in heaven.

Putting these two in the water would kill the fish and endanger all life in the river, just take them out and hang them.......

In our country, and under our system, "The Rule of Law" protects us all. If you want to live in a dictatorship, move and see how your rights are protected if you speak out. That is the beauty of our system. And the tax payer makes this possible. Everyone gets their day in court. It may not always be a correct outcome, but our feelings of revenge are overcome by the process of law.But there is not a better system. Grieve for two lost souls who did this to a good person. Pray that Jesus will lift them and they will see how monstrous their actions were and pray for forgiveness. The system will take care of them. They have lost their lives in the free world. Remember Mr. Slusher in love and pray for his family.
