Mary Kincaid Stickley, 94, passed away at 5:45 a.m. Sunday, May 19, 2013, at Heritage Hall in Wise, VA.
A native of Rose Hill, VA, she was the daughter of late Ballard Ross Stickley and Nan lee Kincaid Stickley. She was born on August 16, 1918, at the family home. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by sisters, Rose Elizabeth (Rosebud) Smiddy and Sara Olivia Hummel and her brother, Fred Frank Stickley. She is survived by a brother-in-law, Dr. Joseph Charles Smiddy, Wise, VA and nieces Elizabeth Wills, Wise, VA, Betsy Ross Stickley, Big Stone Gap, VA, Nancy Aden, Chesterfield, VA, and a nephew, Dr. Joseph F. Smiddy, Church Hill, TN.
Mary was a member of Morgan Memorial United Methodist Church, Rose Hill, VA. She was a founding member and a former Regent of the Major George Gibson Chapter of the DAR. She was a member of Rose Hill Homemaker’s Club, Eastern Star, and UDC. Mary earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Radford College and a Master of Arts Degree from Peabody College. She taught 33 years in the Lee County School System, and spent most of her years teaching fourth grade at rose Hill Elementary. Mary was a world traveler having traveled to Russia, China, Thailand, Europe, British Isles, Australia, and extensively in the United States. Mary especially loved her church, her family, her DAR friends, and her many former students.
Friends and family will gather at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 21, at Robinette Funeral Home in Rose Hill, VA, and will proceed to the Kincaid Family Cemetery in Ewing, VA, for a 3:00 p.m. graveside service. The eulogy will be given by Dr. Joseph F. Smiddy.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Morgan United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 148, Rose Hill, VA 24281. The family would like to thank Mary’s caregivers at Heritage Hall in Big Stone Gap and Wise, VA, and Preston Place in Kingsport, TN.
