He started his long journey of many accomplishments when he left Hensley Settlement in 1949. He soon met his beautiful bride in 1951 and they became married on January 23, 1952. In 1953, he was drafted into the Army for active duty until 1955 with honorable discharge and continued to be in the Army Reserve until 1961. During this time they had a son, Darrell J. Hensley on December 7, 1956. He did various jobs in Ohio, Virginia and Kentucky during this time until he became disabled in 1969.
He had recently lost his two sisters, Delcie Millikan and Ethel James, leaving him as the last of the generation to be on Hensley settlement. He had been battling for his life the last three years and was peacefully taken away by the Lord at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 7, 2009 at Middlesboro Appalachian Regional Hospital.
He leaves behind a loving family that will be lost without him, but know that he is heaven waiting on them to join him. Left behind is his wife of 57 years, Charity Hensley; his only son Darrell Hensley; two grandchildren, Crystal Hensley Betts (Larry) Lexington, Ky., Jason Hensley (Carol) Stamping Ground, Ky.; two beautiful great-grandchildren Brittany and Darrell Hensley II, Stamping Ground, Ky; brother-in-law, Ed Millikan, Clarkston, Mich.; a host of nieces and nephews, Larry (Berylan) Millikan, Gary (Myra) Millikan, Randy Millikan, and Barb (Bob) Johnson all of Michigan. Nancy Brantley, Earlene (Marcus) Greene, and Linda (Rocky) Catron, all of Ewing, Va.; two very special cousins, General (Pat) Gibbons and Eudena (Danny) Willis; a very special brother and sister-in-law, Floyd (Juanita) Murphy, Pineville; and numerous family members that were very special and loved by him: Murphy’s, Gibbons, Hensley’s, etc.; and his caretakers, the women at Middlesboro ARH, and Dr. Rogelio Uy.
Funeral Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the Creech Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Phillip Murphy presiding.
Interment will be in the Cubbage Cememtery. Pallbearers are Larry Betts II, Gary Millikan, Larry Millikan, Marcus Greene, Rocky Catron, and J.C. Cox. Honorary pallbearers are General Gibbons, Homer Hampton, Floyd Murphy, Floyd Murphy Jr., R.B. Murphy, and Hobert Murphy.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Creech Funeral Home, Middlesboro, which is in charge of all arrangements.
