DQ got off to a fast start as Jacob Schneider and Joshua Arnold opened the top of the first inning with singles. Brandon Hale doubled and two-out hits from Craig Collins and Austin Jones quickly gave them a 4-0 lead.
Schneider pitched around a couple of errors in the first and struck out the side in the second and Dairy Queen took advantage of three Sonic errors in the top of the third to stretch their lead to 8-0.
Sonic got going in their half of the third as Tyler McCullough singled and stole second, Tauryn Houghley bunted for a hit and Daniel Webb delivered a three-run home run. He went down and got 3-2 pitch and lined it deep to just left of straight away center field. The ball peaked as it cleared the fence and kept on going. It went over the Pine Mountain Photography trailer parked a good 50 feet beyond the fence and hit a vehicle parked in front of the softball field.
Singles by Trenton Collett and Caleb Partin brought Sonic to within 8-4, but that was as close as they would get.
Schneider and Hale, who had three hits in the game including two doubles, both doubled in the Dairy Queen sixth as they scored four more runs to take a 13-4 lead.
Webb added a ground rule double to drive home McCullough in the bottom of the sixth, to set the final score at 13-5.
Dairy Queen will face Overbay’s at 5:30 p.m. today in the winners bracket while Sonic will face an elimination game on Wednesday.
In the late game, Coke trailed Community Trust 6-4 going into the top of the sixth inning but made the most of their final at bat.
John Epperson started the inning with a double, Louie Hardin walked and Epperson scored as Micah Robbins reached on a fielder’s choice grounder.
The runner’s moved up on a wild pitch and Matthew Schneider beat out an infield hit to bring in Hardin with the tying run. Devon Moyers followed with his second triple of the game to drive in a pair o runs and give Coke their first lead of the game.
They went on to score a total of 12 runs in the sixth and held on to win 16-6.
Coke will play Epps in the winners bracket tonight at 7:30 p.m. with Community Trust playing in an elimination game Wednesday.
