MIDDLESBORO — Several women of Bell County will be honored tomorrow at an event held every year in the Middlesboro Mall. The 11th annual “Celebration of Women” will praise seven women who have given back to their community.

“We honor women that have contributed to their community, civic organizations, churches, UNITE, Relay For Life — any worthy cause in Bell County,” said Leigh Ann Baker, organizer of the celebration. “Basically, it’s just recognizing women in the community that have contributed to different organizations and who go beyond the normal work routine.”

The event is co-sponsored by the Bell Co. Health Department and First State Financial bank and held in the center court of the mall.

Baker said that this year, the committee selected seven women, instead of the traditional five, to receive honor at the event. Baker said it wasn’t easy narrowing down the selection.

“That’s why we ended up with seven instead of five,” said Baker. “There are so many deserving women in the community.”

Opening ceremonies, led by Baker, will kick off the event at 11 a.m. Then Bell Co. Judge-Executive Albey Brock, presiding as Master of Ceremonies, will read the ladies biographies and present them with plaques. Baker added that First State Financial will supply refreshments and also has a small gift for each woman.

At noon, the Pine Mountain Dancers will entertain the crowds with what Baker described as their “half-time entertainment.”

There will also be exhibitors set up in the mall representing area organizations.

“We have exhibitors that come and set up tables... with things that pertain to women,” said Baker. Some of those will include Mary Kay Cosmetics, Curves, Southeastern Kentucky Community College, the Bell Co. Extension Office, UNITE, and Lighthouse Missions. The Bell Co. Health Dept. will also have a table to address any kind of women’s health issues.

Baker said there has been a long tradition of great women honored at the event.

“We’ve had 48 past recipients. Seven of them have passed away,” said Baker.
