M’boro 11s open tourney with loss

LONDON — The Middlesboro 11-year-old All-Stars made a few too many defensive miscues Wednesday as they dropped the opening game of the District 4 tournament to Knox County 15-5.

Two errors led to three Knox runs in the top of the first inning.

But Middlesboro answered back in the bottom of the inning.

Logan Capps singled on the first pitch he saw leading off and one out later Daniel Webb deposited and 0-1 pitch over the left field fence for a two-run homer.

The first five Knox batters reached base in the second inning and they all came around to score as Middlesboro found themselves in an 8-2 hole.

Knox County added four more in the third to make it 12-2.

Middlesboro got one run back in their half of the third as Webb’s base hit scored Capps again.

It was 13-3 going into the bottom of the fourth and Middlesboro had to score to keep the game going.

Austin Jones the inning off by reaching on a walk and courtesy runner Craig Collins made it all the way around to third as Joey Foreman’s hard grounder to short went for an error.

Louie Hardin brought Collins home by dropping a hit in along the right field line and Dylan Gibson’s RBI ground out scored Foreman to bring Middlesboro to within 13-5.

But Knox was able to add two runs in the top of the fifth and kept Middlesboro off the board in the bottom of th e inning to end it with a 15-5 win.

Webb and Capps led Middlesboro with two hits each and Johnny Partin also had a single.

Middlesboro will play either Corbin or Burnside on Monday at 6 p.m. in an elimination game.
