Cumberland Gap BMA prepares for Fall events

CUMBERLAND GAP, Tenn. — The Cumberland Gap Board of Mayor and Aldermen (BMA) met in regular session on Tuesday evening to discuss local matters and plan for approaching community events.

Alderman Jerry Hopson reported on behalf of the Streets and Parks Committee and urged community members to donate any seasonal decorations — such as ribbons, hay and mums — in order to decorate the town for fall. Donations are encouraged and will gladly be accepted.

As part of the tourism/events report, Alderman John Ravnum reported on upcoming community events. He stated that Crazy Aunt Sadie’s Yard Sale Day will be held Saturday, October 3, throughout the town of Cumberland Gap. The set up fee of is $5 for residents and $10 for non-residents. Registration will be required and all vendors are expected to register to ensure organization. Ravnum added that all proceeds will go to the Cumberland Gap Volunteer Fire Department. he said that anyone interested in registering should contact Cumberland Gap Town Hall or visit the town’s website at www.townofcumberlandgap.com.

Also coming up is a concert featuring Hannah Nichole and the Silver Cloud Band. The group will be playing a free show from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, September 26, at the Cumberland Gap Pavilion. Then, on October 9 through the 11, Cumberland Gap National Park will be hosting a Civil War Weekend.

In other business, Phyllis Hopson addressed the board in order to get approval to proceed with the paperwork to establish a non-profit Fine Arts Council in Cumberland Gap.

“We would like to organize this so that we can have our area artists come in a couple of times a year and be able to sell their artwork,” explained Hopson.

The Fine Arts Board plans to bring people into the city by embracing local artists, of all types, and promoting the importance of creativity.

“You have to start somewhere,” stated Hopson. “It might not be that big at the beginning, but hopefully it grows to where you can actually, maybe, give out some scholarships and things like that.”

Mayor Douglas made the motion to create the Fine Arts Council and all approved with a roll call vote.

In other business, the board discussed and/or approved the following:

• The minutes of the August 3 meeting

• Financial report and updated budget status

• Monthly bills and payments.

• Town water and sewer concerns/updates

• Chlorine testing for area creeks

• Fire Department Chief John Adams has been approved to attend a Fire Inspector Course for emergency service/fire training certification.

• The board also plans to establish a charge for false emergency alarms.

• The board adopted a motion for a second reading amending 2008-2009 fiscal year budget.

• Zoning concerns for Roslyn property will be tabled until next meeting upon land survey completion.
