Bell County sophomore running back Cory Davenport slips a tackle and is off to the races during action earlier this season. Davenport ran for 212 yards and two TDs on just 13 carries in Friday night’s 63-0 win at McCreary Central.
Bell County competed a perfect district season Friday with a convincing 63-0 win at McCreary Central.

The Bobcats rolled up 512 total yards, including 399 on the ground. They also intercepted four pass and recovered three fumbles in the game.

Sophomore Cory Davenport led the team with 212 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries. Eight other Bobcats ran the ball and seven different players scored touchdowns.

“We averaged 10-12 yards a carry, offensively we did a pretty good job and I thought my young kids played well,” said Bell coach Dudley Hilton.

McCreary came out fired up on their senior night and opened the game with a long drive that took up nearly half of the first quarter.

Zach Roark broke a pair of long runs and the big play was a 37-yard pass that Dustin Goins caught after it was tipped by Matt Raines.

That gave the Raiders a first down around the Bobcat 12, but they would go backwards from there as Bell held on downs.

“People don’t realize that McCreary has probably the best team they’ve ever had. They’ve got 14 seniors and they were 6-2 so they’ve got a good, winning attitude,” Hilton said. “We just got after them. They ran the ball on us early a little bit, but we made some adjustments.”

Davenport ran for 6 yards up the middle and then bounced one to the outside and went 64 yards for a touchdown. John Dudley Hilton added the extra point to put Bell up 7-0 with 5:46 to play in the first.

Bell’s next two possessions ended with Ben Madon throwing touchdown passes. First he hooked up with Keith Lowe for a 29-yard TD, then Cody Davenport for a 62-yard score as the Bobcats built a 21-0 lead in the first quarter.

Cory Davenport’s second touchdown run covered 8 yards and made it 28-0 early in the second quarter.

Hilton added a 5-yard TD run before halftime and Taylor Mills went 22-yards for TD in the third quarter.

Up 40-0, Bell went to their backups and just kept on scoring.

Freshman Jonathan Polly had touchdown runs of seven and 29 yards and Ryan Collett capped the scoring with a 49-yard interception return for a TD.

Collett had two interceptions off McCreary backup quarterback Dylan Barnett while Keith Lowe and Josh Brown both picked off passes from Aaron Watts.

Lowe, Scotty Henderson and Polly also recovered fumbles in the game.

Coach Hilton said the Bobcats still need to work on their focus as they prepare for the playoffs.

“We’ve just got to get together more as a team. We’ve got a good attitude, but we just need to put our priorities where they need to be,” he said. “If we’re going to make a run, we’ve all got to focus on the next game.”

Bell County (8-1, 4-0 in District 7-4A) closes out the regular season at home against Harlan County next week while McCreary Central (6-3, 1-3) will host Lynn Camp.

The Bobcats will host a first round playoff game aglint Greenup County while McCreary will visit Lawrence County for round one.

Hilton was proud of sweeping the district once again, but has loftier goals for the 2009 Bobcats.

“We lost everything from last year and it was supposed to be a little bit of a rebuilding year for us,” he said. “We come back, bounced back and won our district pretty convincingly, but that’s no what we set our goal on doing.

“I’m real excited with this team and they’ve just got to get excited and know what kind of opportunity they’ve got ahead of them. Once they realize it and start working harder I just think good things can come to them.”
