KETTLE ISLAND — Carl Wayne “Crow” Caldwell, age 51, passed away on Friday, October 23, 2009, at Pineville Community Hospital.

He was born at Stoney Fork on May 19, 1958, and was a son of the late Jerome and Lucy Brock Caldwell. A member of the Mill Creek Baptist Church, he had been a surface coal miner for 13 years at Straight Creek Mining and for 9 years at Cyprus-Kanawha Mining.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by brothers, Jarvis Caldwell and David Caldwell; sisters, Judy Bailey, Ali Fair Saylor and Elvie Helton; grandson, Nathaniel Dylan Caldwell; brothers-in-law, Joe Blevins, Boone Bailey, Arnold Saylor and Bill R. Mead; sister-in-law, Bobbie Helton; niece, Sherry Lynn Caldwell; and nephew, Paul Cox Caldwell.

Survivors include his wife of 20 years, Patricia Ann Howard Caldwell of Kettle Island; children, Angela M. Hoskins and husband Kenny of Kettle Island, and Rocky D. Caldwell of Middlesboro; step-children, Shawn Coley and wife Bobbi of Pineville, and Aaron Coley of West Virginia; grandchildren, Austin, Cody, Angela, Kenny, Mackenzie, Alexis, Brianna and Evan; brothers, Dewey Helton of Bradfordtown, Jimmy Ray and Dianna Caldwell of Stoney Fork, Baxter and Lisa Caldwell of Stoney Fork, Jerome, Jr. and Tina Caldwell of Stoney Fork, Arthur and Debbie Caldwell of Middlesboro, Jeffery and Vicki Caldwell of New Tazewell, Tenn., Ralph and Teresa Caldwell of Arjay, Sonny and Geraldine Caldwell of Arjay, Floyd and Wanda Caldwell of Fields, Lawrence and Shirley Caldwell of Stoney Fork, and J.C. Caldwell of Stoney Fork; sisters, Irene and Glenn Wright of Stoney Fork, Christine Blevins of Stoney Fork, Ada Mae and Denver Helton of Indianapolis, Ind., and Lillie and Dennis Helton of Indianapolis, Ind.; sister-in-law, Wanda Caldwell; brother-in-law, Lewis “Red” Jones; 36 nieces and 28 nephews; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Jana Mead of Kettle Island, Gary and Barbara Howard of Greenwood, Ind., Charles and Marsetta Saylor of Flat Lick, Mary Lou Saylor of Kettle Island, Larry Howard of Kettle Island, Donny and Denise Howard of Speedwell, Tenn., Vicki and Bob Fleeman of Speedwell, Tenn., and Sheila and Earl Asher of Leslie County, Ky.; and a host of other relatives and many friends.

Services were at 2 p.m. Monday at the Mill Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Barry Gibson and the Rev. Ron Howard presiding. Music was by Shirley Caldwell, Mickey Wilder, Jim Miracle, Benny Howard, Roger Howard and Ron Howard.

Burial followed in the Howard Family Cemetery at Kettle Island. Pallbearers were Matt Caldwell, Michael Caldwell, Tim Caldwell, Doyle Caldwell, Claudie Wilder, Kenny Mosley, Allen Caldwell, Mitchell Caldwell, Scott Blevins, Marvin Caldwell, Denny Caldwell and Jamie Caldwell. Honorary pallbearers were Bill Bailey, Larry Howard, Gary Howard, Bob Fleeman, Earl Asher, Charles Saylor, Ted Wilder, Joe Long, Terry Caldwell and Randall Elliott.

The family received friends after 6 p.m. Sunday at the Mill Creek Baptist Church.
