The Cumberland Gap Panther used a series of turnovers late in the third quarter and early in the fourth to break open a tight game against Hancock County and pulled away to a 69-52 win Monday.

Senior forward Jeffrey Matlock led four Panther in double figures with 18 points. Trae Minton finished with 16, John Douglas 14 and Mason Goad 10. Senior Whitt Willis added nine to a balanced Cumberland Gap attack.

Playing their second straight game without starters Timmy Ayers and Ben Arnold, who were suspended for violating team rules, the Panthers built a 12-9 first quarter lead and held on for a 19-18 lead after a defensive-minded first half.

“We looked more fluid tonight. That last game people looked a little confused because they were in situations they weren’t used to being in,” coach Joe Wolfenbarger said. “You miss your two starters, but it was good to get some other kids valuable experience. In the long run it will be beneficial in more ways than one.”

The Panther lead was 31-28 with about three minutes to play in the third but they closed the period with a 13-5 run to take control of the game. Matlock scored 11 of his points in the third and Douglas and Goad also had baskets during the decisive run.

Goad’s basket early in the fourth along with a 3-pointer from Minton and a jumper from Willis put the game out of reach and CGHS coasted to the 17-point win.

The Indians were led by Sloan Holt’s 18 points.

Cumberland Gap (16-9, 7-4 district) plays at Oneida tonight and will host Grainger Friday in their home finale.
