Charles James Givens, 40, was arrested Thursday afternoon and charged with first degree murder after he turned himself in for shooting 22-year-old Misty Leann Garrett, a home health worker of Jonesville, Va., at his residence in Rose Hill, according to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.
Givens told Judge Larry Lewis that he could not afford his own attorney and would need one appointed.
Givens also appeared to have difficulty signing papers at the arraignment and needed assistance.
A number of family members related to Garrett were present in the courtroom for the arraignment.
Another hearing has been scheduled for Givens on March 24 at 9:30 a.m.
