Pineville senior Chatman Taylor delivers a pitch during action earlier this season. Taylor hurled a one-hitter while allowing two earned runs with seven strikeouts and three walks in Thursday’s 5-3 win over Knox Central. She also doubled and added an RBI groundout.
PINEVILLE — The Lady Mountain Lions scored all five of their runs in the bottom of the sixth inning Thursday as they came from behind to beat Knox Central 5-3.

“I think this helps us to get back on track,” said Lady Lion coach Shari Knuckles. “We know we’ve got potential, it’s just a matter of putting it all together at the right time.”

Pineville trailed 2-0 going into the bottom of the sixth, but had the top of their order coming up and batted around.

Victoria Knuckles led off with a single and Whitney Partin followed with a triple to bring her home. Partin scored on an RBI ground out by Chatman Taylor to tie the game at two.

Singles by Rebekah Brooks, Stephanie Epperson and Ali Knuckles loaded the bases and courtesy runner Annalee Adams scored the go-ahead run as Meredith Bowling reached on an error.

One out later Sierra Rutherford delivered a two-run base hit to give the Lady Lions some breathing room with a 5-2 lead.

A pair of walks brought the tying run to the plate in Knox Central’s Johnna Yeager and she line a shot toward the left-center field gap. But Bowling, Pineville’s junior center fielder made a diving catch to rob Yeager of extra bases.

Karley Hamilton tagged up and scored on the play to make it 5-3, but Pineville’s Chatman Taylor fielded a come-backer and threw on to first for the final out.

Taylor pitched all seven innings to get the win. She allowed three runs, one earned on one hit while striking out seven and walking three.

Taylor also doubled in the game while Pineville’s other hits before the sixth inning came on singles by Brooks, Epperson and Rutherford.

“We’ve had a rough week, losing at Whitley County and then a 6-5 heart-breaker at Barbourville,” Knuckles said. “Right now we’re just starting to peak a little bit, but I don’t think we’ve reached our full potential.”

Pineville (2-4, 1-1) is off until Tuesday when they play at Knox Central.

“We had a couple of teams that we usually play cancel on us and then we went straight into the All A,” said Knuckles. “So we’ve had to play some of the bigger schools early. That’s got us focused and ready for district play and hopefully we can come back and force a three-way tie.”

The Lady Panthers (7-8, 1-1) play at McCreary Central today then host Barbourville on Saturday.
