PINEVILLE — The Middlesboro man charged with killing his son and then reportedly fleeing into Claiborne County has pleaded “not guilty” in Bell County District Court.

Richard Goodman Sr., 47, appeared before District Court Judge Robert Yoakum on Friday morning via video conference from the Bell County Detention Center.

Goodman will be represented in court by a public defender.

Judge Yoakum waited to set bond until a bond hearing had been held.

Yoakum scheduled a preliminary hearing for Goodman on May 3.

Goodman Sr. allegedly shot his son Richard Goodman Jr., 23, on April 8 at their residence on Parker Lane, according to the Middlesboro Police Department.

Police described the incident as a “domestic argument that got out of control.”

Goodman was reportedly spotted fleeing into Claiborne County through the Cumberland Gap Tunnel and was quickly arrested.

Lt. Tom Busic and Detective Joe Holder are leading the investigation.
