Longtime Middlesboro barber Johnnie Greene died Thursday doing what he loved to do … cutting hair at the Village Barber Shop.

Greene, who trained as a barber while serving in the United States Navy in World War II, had been cutting hair in Middlesboro for 62 years. He began his career in 1948 at the Manring Barber Shop, which was located on Cumberland Avenue in downtown Middlesboro. He later operated his own shop, the Village Square Barber Shop, which he opened in 1970.

Although he sold the shop and retired several years ago, he continued to cut hair at his former shop a couple days a week.

In an interview with The Daily News in 2008, he stated that he kept on working because he still enjoyed it, and he liked “seeing old friends and meeting new people.”

A proud Navy veteran, like so many American teenagers at the time, Greene enlisted to serve his country in World War II at the age of 17. During the war he served aboard the LST 339, which was assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre.

Greene was also a longtime member of East Cumberland Avenue Baptist Church in Middlesboro.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday at East Cumberland Avenue Baptist Church, and funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the church.

A complete obituary will be published Friday.
