The Middlesboro Little League championship game was a classic Wednesday night as Overbay’s pulled out a 14-12 win over Sonic in seven innings.

Logan Capps homered with one out in the top of the seventh inning to put Overbay’s in front. Jacob Mike hit a ground-rule double with two outs and then scored on a single by Van Ball to make it 14-12.

Jacob Spurlock came on to pitch the bottom of the seventh and pitched around a lead off walk to Ryan Brock and a two-out intentional walk to Daniel Webb to earn the save. He struck out two in the inning.

Sonic had jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning as Tyler McCullough led off with a triple and scored on a wild pitch as Trenton Stephney walked. Stephney scored on Webb’s double and Trenton Collett followed with an RBI triple.

Overbay’s came back with two runs in the second. Scott Overbay singled and Tyler Williams walked to start the inning and Overbay later scored on a wild pitch. With two outs Joshua Overbay and Capps walked to load the bases and Spurlock dropped in a single down the right field line to score Williams and make the score 3-2.

A home run by Webb in the third put Sonic up 4-2. They added two more in the fourth as Ervin Dawson singled and Brock reached on an error. They both came around to score as McCullough reached on an error for a 6-2 lead.

McCullough reached his pitch limit through four innings and finished with 10 strikeouts and three walks while allowing two runs on two hits.

A series of walks, wild pitches and throwing errors allowed Overbays to score four runs in the fifth to tie the game. Capps, Spurlock, Mike and Ball all scored runs in the inning.

Sonic went back into the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Webb and Collett opened the frame with singles and Tauryn Huguely reached on a fielder’s choice as Collett was forced out at second. Caleb Partin then doubled to drive in Webb and Huguely for an 8-6 Sonic lead.

Overbay’s rallied after two were out in the top of the sixth. Capps singled, Spurlock walked and Mike reached on an error as two runs scored to tie the game. Van Ball then doubled and came all the way around to score on an error to make it 10-8. Scott Overbay single and Tyler Williams reached on an error they would both later come around to score on wild pitches as the Overbay’s lead grew to 12-8.

Sonic didn’t go down without a fight. McCullough singled to start the bottom of the sixth and then scored as Stephney reached on an error. After Webb was intentionally walked, Stephney scored on a wild pitch to make it 12-10. One out later Huguely’s fly ball to left fell in for a two-base error as Webb came around to score. With two outs and Huguely on third base Dakota Spencer delivered a base hit off pitcher Joe Nagle’s glove to again tie the game and force the extra frame.

Overbay’s rallied in the seventh to finish as both the regular season and tournament champions. They’re overall record for 2010 was 19-2.
