WILLIAMSBURG — The 2010 Little League All-Star tournament got underway this weekend with the 11- & 12-year-old boys Area 3 tournament at Williamsburg.

In Saturday’s games at Williamsburg it was Knox County opening the tournament with a 24-3 win over Pineville/Bell County.

Pineville/Bell got singles from Tucker Woolum and Jordan Smith in the first inning along with walks from Jordan Wombles, Treyton Humfleet and Trent Lefevers as they scored all three of their runs in the first inning.

But Knox County put up a huge second inning to take control of the game and shut out Pineville/Bell from there.

In the late 11-& 12-year-old game Williamsburg held off a late Middlesboro charge to take a 13-8 win.

Daniel Webb lined a two-run homer over the right-center field fence in the first for Middlesboro to tie the game. Williamsburg built a 10--3 lead over the next three innings, but Middlesboro didn’t lay down.

They put up five runs in the bottom of the fifth to get within 10-8, but Williamsburg got a home run of their own in the sixth and put up three runs to hang on the 13-8 win.

Webb had two singles to go along with his home run, scored twice and drove in four runs to lead Middlesboro. Holden North doubled twice and singled as he scored two runs and drove in one. Caleb Partin, Logan Capps and Tyler Williams all doubled while Austin Lay and Robert Nelson added singles for Middlesboro.

Saturday’s results set up an elimination game between Middlesboro and Pineville/Bell on Sunday. Middlesboro came out on top 13-6.

North had a single, double and a walk as he scored three runs and drove in two. Capps added two singles, reached on an error, scored three times and drove in two. Webb doubled in two runs while Austin Jones singled for the other Middlesboro hit. Robert Nelson and Williams both walked twice and scored two runs while Joey Foreman and Dillon Spade both walked once and scored a run. Caleb Heck reached on an error and also scored.

Capps pitched a complete game to get the win. He allowed six runs on seven hits while striking out six and walking three.

For Pineville/Bell Wombles led the way with a triple and a single to drive in two runs and score one. Woolum singled twice and scored two runs. Vic Morris also scored two runs after a single and reaching on an error. Jordan Smith and Will Adams also singled for Pineville/Bell. Treyton Humfleet walked twice and scored a run while Ethan Mason also reached on a walk.

The loss ended the post-season run for Pineville/Bell.

Knox County downed Williamsburg 10-0 in five innings to win the Area 3 championship Sunday afternoon.

Middlesboro and Williamsburg were scheduled to meet Monday in an elimination game (two teams from Area 3 advance to the District 4 tournament in Harlan.) Rain postponed that game until today and the teams will meet in Williamsburg at 6 p.m.
