Trey Treece heads around the corner after catching a short pass during last week’s game. He had two catches for 38 yards and led the team with 14 tackles in Friday’s loss to Oneida.
The Panthers got on the board first as Wesley Nance came away with an interception and took it back 69 yards for a touchdown. Joseph Jenkins’ extra point put Cumberland Gap up 7-0 in the first quarter.
Sam Woodard rumbled into the end zone from 33 yards out early in the second quarter for Oneida and Lay’s kick tied the game at 7.
Cumberland Gap drove down the field and took a 14-7 lead into the half. Senior wide receiver Austin Oney scored the go-ahead TD on a 28 yard pass from Blake Franklin.
Woodard got free again in the third quarter and went 44 yards for his second TD of the night the conversion try was no good so the Panthers clung to a 14-13 lead.
Franklin’s one-yard keeper gave CGHS some breathing room at 21-13, but Oneida answered once again.
This time it was Shooter Hayes recovering a fumble in the end zone. The two-point pass attempt was no good and the Panthers stayed on top 21-19.
Oneida got themselves back in scoring position early in the fourth quarter and Lay’s 25-yarder proved to be the deciding score as neither team would score over the final 7:18.
Franklin was 13-of-26 passing for 146 yards with one touchdown and one interception. He also led the Panthers with 44 rushing yards on 16 carries. Oney was the leading Panther receiver with five catches for 58 yards and the TD. Jenkins caught five passes for 44 yards and Trey Treece had two receptions for 38 yards.
Treece led the Panther defense with 14 tackles and Joseph Digiulian added a fumble recovery.
Cumberland Gap (1-2) is at West Greene next Friday while Oneida (1-3) has an open date.
