After Middlesboro firefighters snuffed out a dangerous fire on an abandoned building on Ashbury Avenue, small flames continued to rekindle. Firefighter Larry Adkins remained at the scene with another shift member to control the blaze. Shown above is Adkins hosing out a flame in the building’s second story.
Luckily, firefighters say, school at nearby Middlesboro Intermediary (East End) was not in session. The blaze was contained to the building, but Ashbury Avenue was blocked, which would have disrupted school for the day.
Firefighters arrived at the scene shortly after 4 a.m. and found a dangerously hot fire in an abandoned building belonging to local businessman Dallas Shackleford.
Fire Captain Joe Asher and his shift were able to put out the blaze, but according to Captain Ron Temple, whose shift arrived at 7 a.m., the fire rekindled in the roof of the structure.
Captain Temple says that the goal of the responders was to keep the building from burning down completely. Two men remained at the scene to keep watch over the building well into Thursday, to eliminate any rekindling flames.
Since the building was without electricity, the cause of the fire is unknown. Temple says that he isn’t sure whether an investigation will be pursued, since the building wasn’t in use.
