Well, Labor Day has come and gone, and even though the temperature outside is in the 80’s and 90’s, we only have about 5 weeks until the first frost. This tells us that it is time to clean up the detritus that has accumulated on and around our vegetable, flower and herb beds, as well as on our lawns and the periphery of our property. This clean up is vital at this time so that dead plants, sticks, high weeds and leaves do not remain to provide cover for over wintering insects.

This particularly true for those of us that garden organically, as insect pests will perish from the cold and exposure if there is no viable cover to protect them. Since we can not use chemicals to reduce insect presence in the spring, we must take advantage of every opportunity presented.

Many folks that tour the garden or call with questions, ask me to keep them advised on the garden’s progress. I will use this article, as space permits, to recap the year now ending.

Starting in November ‘06 and recurring until just 2 weeks ago, I have received 72 gardening catalogs from 52 companies. This equates to a stack over one foot high.

This year there are a total of 42 raised beds, however some are now permanently planted (figs, rhubarb, asparagus and blackberries), of the rotational beds available.
