Next Friday kicks off Hall of Fame weekend for Middlesboro High School. The 2012 class of inductees include Claude W. Conner, Terry Fee, Floyd Patterson, Kevin Gordon and Scott Powell.
Hall of Fame festivities begin Friday evening with a cook out at Bradner Stadium at 6p.m. The inductees will be introduced to the crowd at halftime of the MHS game against Danville and there will also be a social hour after the game at Middlesboro Country Club.
On Saturday the Hall of Fame Club will have their annual meeting and breakfast with the inductees at 9 a.m. at Ryan’s. The official induction ceremony and dinner is Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at Middlesboro High School. Tickets to the induction ceremony and dinner are $ 15.00 each and may be purchased from any selection committee member or at Mikel’s Pharmacy and People‘s Choice Pharmacy ( A limited number of tickets are available).
The Middlesboro Sports Hall of Fame was established for the purpose of honoring past players, coaches and supporters of Middlesboro Sports.
Here’s a closer look at this year’s inductees:
CLAUDE W. CONNER JR. 1961
Wilburn played football, baseball and track for the Yellow Jackets.
In football, he was an offensive and defensive lineman. He was a four year letterman and team captain in 1960. He was named to the First-Team All-Southeastern Kentucky Conference in 1958, 1959 and 1960. In 1959 he was Co-Most Valuable Player of the SEKC. He was named Honorable Mention All-State in 1958, 1959 and 1960. His 1959 Yellow Jackets won the SEKC Championship. He was also a member of the 1957 Jaycee Bowl Team. His Yellow Jackets had a combined record of 24 wins 15 losses and 2 ties.
In baseball, he was a catcher, his Jackets had a combined record of 52 win and 9 losses. They won four District championships, one Regional championship and played in one state play-off.
In track, he participated in the shot-putt.( He did not play college sports).
TERRY FEE 1972
Terry played football, baseball and track for the Yellow Jackets.
In football, he played offensive guard and a defensive linebacker and was named team captain in 1971. He was a first-team All-SEKC and first-team All-State selection. His Yellow Jackets won two SEKC Championships, two District Championships, one Regional Championship.
FLOYD PATTERSON 1989
Floyd played football, basketball and baseball for the Yellow Jackets.
In football he was an offensive center and defensive linebacker. In 1987 he was named to an All-State team. In 1988 he received the Greg Page award and was selected 2nd team All-SEKC and 1st team All-District.
In baseball he was a pitcher and catcher. He was voted the MVP of Middlesboro High School baseball in 1988 and 1989. In 1988 and 1989 he was named to the All-Tournament team. In 1989 he played in the East-West All-Star game held in Lexington.
Floyd excepted a baseball scholarship to Kentucky State University. He Later transferred to Sue Bennett College and continued to play base ball. He pitched two no hit game in one week, one being a perfect game.
KEVIN GORDON 1995
Kevin played golf for the yellow jackets. He was on the varsity golf team at MHS for 5 years (including his 8th grade year) and qualified for the Individual KHSAA Boys State Tournament all 5 years. Kevin is the only person in MHS history to qualify for the State Tournament for 5 consecutive years. In 1997 he finished in 4th place at the at the KHSAA State Tournament and was named the U.S. Marine Corps Distinguished Athlete of the year. Kevin was also named the Most Valuable Player on the MHS golf team three times.
His 1990 team was the runner-up in the Regional Tournament. His 1991 team won the SEKC Championship. His 1992 team was SEKC runner-up. His 1993 team was the runner-up in the Regional Tournament and finished 3rd in the KHSAA State Tournament. His 1994 team was the runner-up in the regional Tournament as well as the runner-up in the Kentucky Invitational Tournament.
Kevin had many scholarship offers but chose to attend Eastern Kentucky University to pursue a degree in Criminal Justice. He played golf at EKU for tow semesters. He was the Golf Professional at the London Country Club from 2000 through 2004.
SCOTT E. POWELL 2000
In football he was a running back and nose guard. In 1998 he was named 1st team All-SEKC and 1st team All-District. In 1999 he was selected Honorable Mention All-State.
Scott rushed for 1419 yard on 160 carries and 26 touchdowns in the ‘98 season (according to the Courier Journal), including 9 touchdowns in the Jackets’ final four playoff games and 169 yards and 2 touchdowns in the state championship game. He began the ’99 season with 358 yards and 5 touchdowns before suffering a career ending injury in week 4.
In baseball he was an outfielder and catcher and was a three year starter. He was the starting catcher for the 1999 State Final Four team.
Scott attended the University of Kentucky and in 2003 and 2004 he participated in Olympic Weightlifting. In 2004 he finished sixth in the U.S. Weightlifting National Collegiate Championship.
Scott went on to obtain a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Kentucky, a Master’s Degree from the UK Patterson School of Diplomacy and International Commerce, and a Law Degree from the University of Louisville Brandeis School of Law. While in law school, he was a national champion negotiator. After winning the 2008 moot court negotiation National Championship in Los Angeles, he represented the United States in international competition in London, England, finishing third in the world.
