HARROGATE, Tenn. — The Lady Railsplitters and Lewis University were tied with 7:26 left in regulation, however, the Flyers finished the game with a 20-9 run to take a 74-63 win at Tex Turner Arena on Sunday. The loss drops the LMU women back to 5-5 on the season, while Lewis improves to 6-1.
The Lady Railsplitters started quickly, establishing a 5-0 lead after a layup by Kelsey Bradford and a three-pointer from Haley Nelson. Lewis answered by scoring 11 straight points to take a 11-5 lead with 16:05 left in the half. The Flyers continued to push the pace, extending their lead to eight with a jumper from Nikki Nellen at the 11:23 mark.
With 7:58 to go in the half, Labrenthia Murdock drained a 3-point basket to give Lewis their largest lead to that point at 24-13.
The next three minutes saw the Lady Railsplitters drive to within six, but, the Flyers held LMU at bay as Sam Rinehart drilled a jumper with 4:32 left in the half to give Lewis a 30-20 lead. The Lady Railsplitters rallied with nine-straight points fueled by five from Kalasia Green to cut the deficit to 32-31 with 1:58 left in the half. Nellen knocked down two free throws for Lewis and LMU countered with a single free throw from MaRanda Boddie with four seconds remaining to go into the break trailing 34-32.
Boddie opened the second half with a jumper to knot the game a 34-34, however, seven-straight points from the Flyers, capped with a jumper from Kristen Itschner, swung Lewis back on top, 41-34. The Lady Railsplitters would continue to fight, eventually regaining the lead for the first time since the 17-minute mark of the first half with a three-pointer from Kelsey Bradford with 8:11 left in regulation.
Holding sway at 54-53, the Lady Railsplitters fell victim to another large run from the Flyers, as Lewis capped off a 13-1 rally with a three-point play from Mariyah Hensely to go back on top, 66-55, with 4:19 to play. The Lady Railsplitters would never be able to cut the deficit to less than seven over the final four minutes as they fell 74-63 to the Flyers.
Bradford (Metropolis, Ill.) paced the Lady Railsplitters with 15 points to go along with three assists and three rebounds. The senior compiled those numbers on 6-13 shooting and a 3-5 mark from the three-point line in 28 minutes of action.
The efforts of Kalasia Green, Kortnay Cox and Edina Musa off the bench fueled a 32-13 advantage in bench scoring for the Lady Railsplitters, as they tallied 11, 10 and nine points respectively. Musa added five rebounds while Cox reigned in four boards.
MaRanda Boddie (Springfield, Ohio) notched another double-double for the Lady Railsplitters with 11 points and 14 rebounds.
Jess Reinhart was the highlight of the afternoon for the Flyers, as she tallied a game-high 18 points to go along with 15 rebounds, which was also a game-high. She was the catalyst for a 46-43 advantage on the glass for Lewis University. Mariyah Hensley sparked the Flyers off the bench with 13 points, while Rinehart, Murdock and Nellen added 11, 12 and 12 points respectively.
The Lady Railsplitters were outscored 36-18 in the paint and committed 16 turnovers which led to 12 points for the Flyers. Lincoln Memorial forced Lewis into 15 turnovers and capitalized with 10 points off those miscues. The Lady Railsplitters held the Flyers to only 42.6-percent shooting in the contest, however, they struggled on the offensive end to the tone of a 33.8-percent mark from the field.
The Lady Railsplitters will look to rebound with one game left on the schedule before breaking for the holidays. LMU hosts Queens University on Wednesday. That game is set to tip at 7 p.m. in Tex Turner Arena.
