Elsie Rowland Ely, age 89 of Harrogate TN, went home to be with the Lord January 10, 2013 after a lengthy illness followed by a brief stay at the Claiborne County Hospital. She was surrounded by family and friends. She was born March 15, 1923 in Arthur, TN, the daughter of the late L.D. and Mabel Carr Rowland.
She had worked at Oak Ridge as part of the atomic program during World War II and was retired from the Tennessee Department of Human Services. She was a chartered member of Gap Creek Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, George Ely; brothers: Hubert and Edwin Rowland; sister: Vernalee Rowland and grandson: Brian William Ely. Elsie was a loving wife, devoted mother, a proud grandmother and a great-grandmother. “Absent from the body, present with the Lord” 2 Corinthians 5:8
She is survived in death by her sons: Eddie (Phyllis) Ely, Gary (Carolyn) Ely, Tom (Beverly) Ely, and Shelby Lynn (Elaine) Ely; grandchildren: Alicia (Brad) Burkhart, Drs. Jennifer (Christian) Hofer, Matthew (Rachel) Ely, Lynn Ely, Tristan Westbrook, Jamie (Josh) Bolton, Michael Ely, Allison Ely, Shellaina Ely, Emily Ely, and Natalie Ely; great grandchildren: Macy, Dillon, Jacob, Ethan, Koren, Amelia, Hannah, Reed and Addison; brother: Roger (Patti) Rowland; sisters: Ruth Keck and Rena Wilson; and a host of nieces and nephews
Special caregivers are Carolyn Ely, Vicki Caldwell, Betty Long, and Joann Ables . The family extends a special recognition to Amedisys Healthcare and Dr. George Day and staff.
Funeral services will be held at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Creech Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. William Boyd Bingham and Rev. Harry Gent presiding. Music will be provided by Thomasa Risner. The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Saturday at the Creech Funeral Home.
Interment will be on Sunday January 13, 2013 at 2:00 pm at the Rowland Cemetery on King Bend Rd. in Cumberland Gap TN.
To honor their mother, the sons of Elsie Ely will be the pallbearers. Honorary Pallbearers are Richard McMurray, Eddie Chumley, Lester Treece, Joe Ely, and Brad Burkhart.
