ANDERSON, S.C. — The Lady Railsplitters led by as many as eight in the second half of Saturday’s game at Anderson, but the Trojans closed the gap and used a three-point play in the final minute to take a 57-55 victory in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action. Lincoln Memorial University (13-11, 6-8 SAC) saw their three-game winning streak come to a close, while Anderson (17-7, 11-3 SAC) capped a season-sweep over the Lady Railsplitters.
Lincoln Memorial jumped out to an eight-point advantage early in the second half of play, but the Trojans used a 10-2 run to pull back into the game, tying it a 33-33 on a jumper by Tilde Ahlin with 13 minutes to play. The two teams traded punches over the final 13 minutes, meeting in a tie on five occasions with a jumper by LMU’s Kalasia Green knotting the game at 47 with 6:34 to play.
The Trojans jumped out to a five-point lead following that tie but the Lady Railsplitters refused to go quietly, fighting back to grab the lead on a layup by Green with 49 seconds to go.
A three-point play by Sierra Simpson with only 25 seconds left on the clock put Anderson back on top. LMU turned the ball over in their next possession but responded by nabbing a steal of their own with eight seconds left, giving Green a look at winning the game. But her three-point shot went begging, as the Lady Railsplitters suffered a heartbreaking 57-55 loss.
Green led LMU with 15 points on seven-of-15 shooting and also added three rebounds, one assist and one steal in 35 minutes of action. Ralissa Nelson chimed in with nine points on three-for-five shooting, while MaRanda Boddie and Kelsey Bradford added eight points apiece.
Lincoln Memorial took a 38-30 margin of victory on the glass, headlined by Boddie’s seven boards. Bradford added six boards to lead the LMU back court in that category. The Lady Railsplitters were, however, plagued by turnovers, as they committed 19 miscues which led to 19 points for the Trojans.
Anderson was led by Alissa Diaz, as she notched a game-high 24 points on nine-of-16 shooting. Amanda Parris also got in on the act with 15 points on five-of-nine shooting from long range.
The Lady Railsplitters rival Carson-Newman on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
