Girls Sweet 16: Corbin eliminated by Shelby Valley

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (AP) — Shelby Valley’s Lakyn Mullins and Brianna Fraley scored 15 points apiece in leading the Lady Cats to a 45-38 win against Corbin Wednesday night in the first round of the KHSAA Sweet 16 in Diddle Arena.

The win was the first ever for Shelby Valley (29-4) in the Sweet 16 and secured a quarterfinal matchup Friday afternoon against Anderson County.

The Region 16 champion Lady Cats led Region 13 champ Corbin (27-9) by as many as 10 points in the third quarter before the Lady Redhounds made a late run.

Corbin’s Kayla Wilson appeared to make a layup with 1:41 left that would’ve given the Lady Redhounds a 40-39 advantage, their first lead of the game. However she was called for traveling and Corbin didn’t score again.

Sarah Ashley was the Lady Redhounds’ leading scorer, finishing with 10 points.

Anderson Co. 65, Henderson Co. 54

Eriel McKee scored 27 points as Anderson County beat Henderson County 65-54 Wednesday in the first round of the KHSAA Girls Sweet 16 tournament.

McKee also added eight rebounds, five steals, two assists and two blocks in leading Region 8 champion Anderson County (33-1) to its first Sweet 16 win.

Makenzie Cann scored 17 points and notched six assists for the Lady Bearcats, while Kali Whiteside collected nine points and 10 rebounds.

Anderson County led the game by as many as 17 points in the third quarter but had to hold on as Henderson County (26-3) cut the lead to 58-54 with just 2:39 left in the fourth quarter.

Maci Brown led the Lady Colonels with 18 points. Ellie Fruit and DeAsia Outlaw added 14 and 13 points apiece for Henderson County, the Region 2 champion.

Montgomery Co. 60, Ashland Blazer 49

Erica Rogers scored 16 points to lead Montgomery County to a 60-49 win over Ashland Blazer in the first round of the Kentucky girls’ Sweet 16 on Wednesday.

Montgomery County (28-6) advances to play Marion County (31-0) in a quarterfinal game Friday.

Schyler Tipton had 15 points and 11 rebounds for Montgomery County, and Macie Spence added 13 points.

Montgomery County took control of the game with an 18-6 advantage in the third quarter.

The Indians shot 57.1 percent from the field while holding Ashland Blazer (25-7) to 29.7 percent field goal shooting.

Haley Sue Foutch, Sydney Cullop and Kaylyn Gambill led the Kittens with 10 points apiece.

Marion Co. 64, Bowling Green 43

Makayla Epps scored 26 points as Marion County beat Bowling Green 64-43 in the first round of the KHSAA Girls Sweet 16 on Wednesday.

Epps also added eight rebounds, five steals and four assists. Kyvin Goodin-Rogers had 19 points, 13 rebounds and four steals.

Marion County (31-0) finished the game with 11 blocks and 15 steals and held Bowling Green (30-5) to 23.6 percent shooting.

The Region 5 champion Knights started the game on an 18-2 run as Bowling Green went without a field goal until the 2:35 mark of the first quarter.

Diamond Marshall led the Region 4 champion Purples with 15 points. Makayla Gray added 11 points and nine rebounds.
