George E. Smith, age 94 of Middlesboro, passed away Friday, Oct. 12, 2012, at Middlesboro Appalachian Regional Hospital after a long illness.

He was born in Middlesboro on March 27, 1918, and was the son of the late William Boyd and Nellie Watson Smith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Anderson Smith; brothers, Robert Smith, Charles Smith, Clay Smith, Richard Smith, James Smith and Lawrence Smith; and sisters, Ethel Thacker, Clara Earles, Dorothy Smith and Bessie Smith.

George was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in the infantry during World War II. Following his Army career, he worked for Kentucky Utilities 35 years until his retirement. His special interests throughout his life included his love for the violin and his fishing and hunting activities. He was a member of Binghamtown Baptist Church.

He is survived by his son, Jeffery Smith; brothers, Willard (Betty) Smith, Donald Smith and Howard Fuson (Dorothy) Smith; sister, Naomi Smith Russell; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services were at 2 p.m., Monday at Shumate Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Green Hills Memorial Gardens.

The family received friends from noon to 2 p.m., Monday at Shumate Funeral Home Chapel.
