Repair Affair just around the corner

With the event right around the corner, Bell County Repair Affair is currently taking applications from households that are in need of assistance.

“We are currently taking applications,” Bell County Repair Affair Coordinator Brian Good. “We are not currently taking any applications for wheelchair ramps, as we have several that have been applied up to this point.”

Good encourages those in need of any other outside assistance — such as gutters, yard work, house painting — with your home to fill out an application with Bell-Whitley CAA. Repair Affair was created by the Bell-Whitley Community Action Agency and several businesses in Bell County. It is a means to offer much needed home repairs and landscape work.

“Our goal is to help as many people as we can on a limited budget.” Good explained. “We are not funded by any government entity or any grants, so we rely solely on donations and volunteers. We try to make those dollars stretch as far as possible so we can assist more people. Another one of our main goals is to do as many wheelchair ramps that we can.”

This year will mark the 22nd year for Repair Affair. The group is made up entirely of volunteers. That means that anyone can volunteer including adults and children. Good wants to point out that if you are under the age of 18 and you wish to volunteer, you must have a parent’s signature and an adult must be present with them at all times during the day.

Good explains that Repair Affair to him means home.

“Most of the people we assist have lost hope,” he explained. “If you don’t have hope, you don’t have anything.”

He said for many, Repair Affair is their last option for someone to help them.

“We help restore the hope that was once almost lost,” said Good. “You would think the ones receiving the help are being the ones blessed and they usually are, but it’s the volunteers that truly get the blessing.”

The 22nd Repair Affair is scheduled for April 27.

“We want the elderly and disabled in our community to see that their neighbors do care about them,” Good said. “I feel, being a Christian, that one of our largest responsibilities is to help others in need and what better way to do that than in your own community?”

If you or a loved one is in need of outside assistance to their homes to please call Bell-Whitley CAA at 606-337-3044 and ask for Brian Good.
